At the risk of disappointing you and seeming unamusing, this is based on a very serious study. eyes ! It must be said that the eye is a very intriguing organ. Did you know that the record for the largest eyes in the world is held by...
the squid (1)! Each of its eyes can be up to
25 cm in diameter, the size of an imposing watermelon, quite practical for exploring the seabed.
This interest that we have in the eyes has pushed us, as skin specialists, to take an interest in the area around the eyes! The skin around the eye is indeed very particular and not long ago I was watching a film where the main heroine was worried about the little wrinkles that appeared around her blue eyes when she smiled. And yes… because the first important point that you have surely already noticed: the eye contour is the part of the face where wrinkles first appear (along with the lip contour)!
1, 2… 15,000 TIMES A DAY!
|
I'm not talking about the number of times you look in a mirror or rearview mirror to see if your fine lines have disappeared, but about the number of blinks you make each day! Yes about 15,000. Besides, since the beginning of this article you must have blinked more than 10 times. The eye area is the most mobile area of the face, and these daily micro-contractions cause fine lines which become visible from the age of 25 (2)!
Besides, apart from creating fine lines and having your eyes closed in photos, what's the point of blinking? To moisturize and cleanse. With each blink, like a windshield wiper, the eyelid cleans the eye and spreads the tear fluid so that the eyeball does not dry out.

DON'T DROP IT, IT'S SO FRAGILE!
During genetic evolution, the eye contour has not inherited only good aspects... because in addition to being subject to numerous daily contractions, it is a particularly sensitive area. The epidermis around the eyes is 3 times thinner than that of the face (0.33-0.36 mm compared to 1-1.6 mm)! There’s not much distance between the two though! And it's not over... the hydrolipidic film, this protective film composed of lipids and moisturizing elements which protects our skin, is almost absent around the eye (2)! This leaves the field open to dehydration and external aggressions.
YOU SEE ALIENS EVERYWHERE, IT’S NORMAL!
You have thousands of bacteria in and around your eye but don't be afraid, this is also the case for all of your skin. Have I reassured you? More seriously, it’s called the ocular microbiota (3). These are “good bacteria” which live in harmony on your eyes and your skin around the eye and which will in particular protect you from “bad bacteria” which would like to settle there. They take up all the space and use all the available food, so pathogenic bacteria cannot develop there. Certain good bacteria like those with the sweet name Corynebacterium mastitidis can even produce antibacterial peptides to destroy the bad bacteria that try to establish themselves in the tear fluid (4)! A real turf war that good bacteria wins most of the time. However, if you use cosmetic products containing a lot of preservatives you will destroy part of this flora. Conservatives don't know the difference, their goal is to destroy everything that moves! By this I mean all bacteria whether they are good or bad for us.
This is one of the reasons that led us to avoid the use of preservatives on all of our ranges, without exception! Zero conservative commitment, always.
If you want another piece of advice, avoid touching your eyes with your hands all the time, because otherwise bacteria from the skin flora on your hands could easily end up in your eyes and cause an imbalance.
DO YOU HAVE BUSINESS CLASS SYNDROME?
You are wondering what is hidden behind this disease which seems unknown to you... and yet, I could not finish an article on the eye area without telling you about it. Imagine, you wake up and once in your bathroom…disaster: bags! You have a swollen eye area, this normally fades during the day, but sometimes not quickly enough for you! These bags under the eyes are caused by lying down at night: water is distributed throughout your body and insufficient lymphatic and venous drainage results in this unsightly water storage.
My tip for getting rid of it easily? A massage of the eye area with sweet almond oil followed by the application of Ecla Lifting Eye Contourt kept cool beforehand!
And finally, why do we call it business class syndrome? Because you can sleep lying down, so the risk of waking up with bags increases... Comfort or bags under the eyes, you have to choose!
